Author Management in Drupal 8

Drupal is a very robust content management system. Part of its appeal to web developers is its profound extensibility. However, the feature to assign author full name to articles is excluded from the Drupal standard installation. This tutorial will walk you through installing the required modules for assigning full names of authors to contents.

Installing and Activating Required Modules

1. Go to the webpages for the Real Name and Token modules.

2. Scroll down the page for the Real Name module and look for the Downloads section. Copy the link for the Real Name module compressed file.

3. Go to Extend in the Drupal dashboard and click on the Install new module button. If the button is missing on the page, you can try to access the complete page directly at /admin/modules/install.

4. The Install new module page will appear. Paste the link from Step 2 into the field underneath Install from a URL. After which, click on the Install button.

5. When the installation is complete, look for the subheading Next steps toward the bottom of the page and then click on the Install another module link below it.

6. You will be brought back to the Install new module page. We will be installing the Token module next.

7. Go back to the page for the Token module and scroll down to the Downloads section. Copy the link for the Token module compressed file.

8. Go back to the Install new module page in the Drupal dashboard and paste the link into the field underneath Install from a URL. After which, click on the Install button.

9. When the installation is complete, look for the subheading Next steps toward the bottom of the page and then click on the Enable newly added modules link below it.

10. You will be brought back to the Extend page. Scroll down the page to the subheading Other and tick the checkboxes for the Real Name and Token modules. And then, click on the Install button.

Configuring Real Name Module

11. Go to Configuration and look for the People section. Click on Account settings.

12. The Account settings page will appear. Click on the Manage fields tab.

13. Click on the Add field button.

14. Select Text (plain) from the dropdown list under Add a new field. The Label subsection will appear. Type in First Name in the field below Label. Click on the Save and continue button.

15. Type in 100 in the field under Maximum length. In the options below Allowed number of values, select Limited and type in 1, respectively. And then, click on the Save field settings button.

16. Tick the checkbox for Required field in the next page. After which, click on the Save settings button.

17. The First Name field will be saved. Click on the Add field button to add Last Name.

18. Select Text (plain) from the dropdown list under Add a new field. The Label subsection will appear. Type in Last Name in the field below Label. Click on the Save and continue button.


19. Type in 50 in the field under Maximum length. In the options below Allowed number of values, select Limited and type in 1, respectively. And then, click on the Save field settings button.

20. Tick the checkbox for Required field in the next page. After which, click on the Save settings button.

21. The Last Name field will be saved.

22. Click on the Real name tab. In the General Settings box, empty the field under Realname pattern. And then, click on the Browse available tokens link below the field.

23. The Available tokens window will pop up at the bottom-right corner of the page. Click in the empty field under Realname pattern in the General Settings box. After which, click on the link right next to First Name in the Available Tokens window. Go back to the field below Realname pattern. Add a space after [user:field_first_name] and then click on the link right next to Last Name in the Available Tokens window. Click on the Save configuration button afterwards.

Assigning Authors to Contents

24. To assign an author to an article, go to Content in the Drupal dashboard and click on the Add content button.

25. Select Article. The Create article page will appear.

26. You will find the Authoring Information box to the right of the page. When you publish an article, you can type in the name of the user that you want to be the article author into the field under Authored by.

27. Click on the People tab at the top of the dashboard and begin adding users that you can assign as authors.
